Aug 16, 2007 Hazelwood Cemetery Blitz

HELP! was the plea broadcast by email on August 7.  Eileen Kaufenberg (cemetery coordinator) had stepped in a grass-covered hole at Hazelwood Cemetery on July 25th and had broken her ankle in two places. She needed help finishing the job of cataloguing the rest of the cemetery.

Was anyone up for the task?

The following volunteers came to the rescue: Bob Ripley, Lorene Lyle, Kathy Kasatkin, Judy Phelps, Christine Lamb, Fay Hicks, Nancy Weber, Trudy Ross, Trudy Archie & Diane Luck.

With pen and clipboard in hand, moss scraper, picnic lunch, lawn chair, and a happy disposition, they set out at 10:00 am. Of course, Eileen was there to give instruction and lead them kindly to the right sections after they went astray several times!

The volunteers started to appreciate what Eileen had to go through with her enormous task of cataloguing, not only this cemetery, but many others in the area. No wonder she was always asking for help!

After several hours of bending, scraping, checking sheets, writing in new names they headed back to the starting point to have lunch. After a delightful “cemetery picnic” some returned to finish off their sections and others took their leave.
